## Key takeaways

- The Gottman Method is an approach to couples therapy and education developed by John and Julie Gottman, built on decades of observational research on how couples interact.
- Its central model, the Sound Relationship House, has seven levels from building love maps to creating shared meaning, supported by two walls: trust and commitment.
- Core tools include spotting the Four Horsemen, softening how conflict starts, taking breaks when flooded, making repair attempts and turning toward bids for connection.
- The research on couple interaction behind the method is extensive; outcome research on the therapy itself is growing but includes many small or uncontrolled studies.
- A 2024 study in Norway found a 12-hour Gottman Seven Principles program improved relationship quality, delivered in person or online.

The Gottman Method is an approach to couples therapy and relationship education created by psychologists John and Julie Gottman. It's built on decades of research observing how couples talk, fight and make up. Its core model, the Sound Relationship House, focuses on three things: deepening friendship and affection, managing conflict gently, and building shared meaning. Its best-known tools include the Four Horsemen, repair attempts and turning toward bids for connection.

## Where does the Gottman Method come from?

The Gottman Method grew out of research rather than the other way around. John Gottman's early work set out to find whether there were reliable patterns of behavior that separated happy from unhappy couples. He and colleagues developed methods for analyzing sequences of interaction and found consistent patterns. [^1]

Much of the foundational research was done with psychologist Robert Levenson. Couples came into a lab, discussed a disagreement while being video-recorded and physiologically monitored, and were followed for years.

Key findings include:

- In a study of 73 married couples, those whose conflict tilted toward negativity had lower satisfaction, more defensiveness, poorer health, and higher risk of considering or actually separating four years later. [^2]
- Studies of committed gay and lesbian couples found that satisfaction and stability were related to the same kinds of emotional qualities seen in heterosexual couples. [^3]
- Everyday playfulness and enthusiasm between newlyweds were linked to more humor and affection during conflict. [^4]

### A fair note on the research

The Gottman research is influential, and its core ideas fit well with wider relationship science. It also has limits worth knowing:

- Many foundational studies used small samples, often married couples from specific US cities.
- Some well-publicized prediction models were developed after the fact; the authors themselves called one 14-year analysis exploratory and post hoc. [^5]
- Headline claims like "predicting divorce with over 90% accuracy" come from those specific models and samples. [^6] They shouldn't be read as a test anyone can take to predict their own future.

## What is the Sound Relationship House?

The Sound Relationship House is the Gottman Method's model of a healthy relationship. It has seven levels, connected to the seven principles in John Gottman's book _The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work_, and two walls that hold it up: trust and commitment. [^7]

| Level | What it means | Try this |
| -------------------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------ |
| 1. Build love maps | Know your partner's inner world: worries, hopes, friends, stresses | Ask one curious question a day |
| 2. Share fondness and admiration | Express respect and appreciation | Name one thing you admire each day |
| 3. Turn toward instead of away | Respond to everyday bids for attention | Look up and respond when your partner shares something |
| 4. The positive perspective | Give each other the benefit of the doubt | Assume good intent when something goes wrong |
| 5. Manage conflict | Handle disagreements gently and accept that some problems are perpetual | Use a soft startup and take breaks when flooded |
| 6. Make life dreams come true | Support each other's hopes and goals | Ask about the dream behind a strong position |
| 7. Create shared meaning | Build rituals, values and goals together | Create one weekly ritual |

The model is a house for a reason: the upper levels rest on the lower ones. Couples often want to jump straight to "manage conflict," but conflict goes better when friendship and affection are strong.

## What are the core Gottman tools?

### The Four Horsemen and their antidotes

The Four Horsemen are four communication patterns that, according to Gottman research, can predict the end of a relationship: criticism, contempt, defensiveness and stonewalling. [^8] The Gottman Institute distinguishes criticism, an attack on your partner's character, from a complaint about a specific issue, and describes contempt, such as mockery, sarcasm and eye-rolling, as treating a partner from a position of superiority. [^8]

Each horseman has an antidote:

| Horseman | Antidote |
| ------------- | --------------------------------------------------------- |
| Criticism | Gentle startup: describe your feeling and a specific need |
| Contempt | Build a culture of appreciation and respect |
| Defensiveness | Take responsibility for even part of the problem |
| Stonewalling | Take a break and self-soothe, then return |

Read the full breakdown in [the Four Horsemen of relationships, explained](https://strongercouple.app/blog/four-horsemen-of-relationships).

### Breaks for flooding

When someone is flooded, meaning physically overwhelmed during conflict, the Gottman Institute recommends a break of at least 20 minutes doing something calming, with an agreed time to come back. [^9] See our guide to [emotional flooding](https://strongercouple.app/blog/emotional-flooding).

### Repair attempts

A repair attempt is "any statement or action — silly or otherwise — that prevents negativity from escalating out of control." [^10] The Gottman Institute's repair checklist groups phrases into categories such as "I feel," "Sorry," "Get to yes" and "Stop action." [^10] Learn more in [repair attempts: how couples recover mid-argument](https://strongercouple.app/blog/repair-attempts).

### Turning toward bids

Bids are small attempts to connect, like a comment, a question or a touch. Turning toward them, instead of ignoring or rejecting them, builds the friendship that everything else rests on. See [bids for connection](https://strongercouple.app/blog/bids-for-connection).

### The State of the Union meeting

A weekly conversation that starts with appreciation and then works through one issue using gentle, structured turn-taking. Many couples find a regular, predictable time to talk makes hard topics feel less loaded.

## What does the evidence show?

The evidence comes in two layers: research on couple interaction that the method is built on, and research on whether the therapy and programs work.

**The interaction research** is extensive and has been influential across the field, though, as noted above, many key studies used modest samples.

**The outcome research** is growing:

- **Gay and lesbian couples.** An uncontrolled study of 106 gay and lesbian couples reported significant improvements in relationship satisfaction after 11 sessions of Gottman Method Couples Therapy. [^11] Without a control group, it can't rule out other explanations for improvement, and several authors are connected to the Gottman Institute.
- **Program delivered in Norway.** A 2024 study of 490 participants and a 242-person comparison group found the 12-hour Gottman Seven Principles program improved relationship quality, and worked equally well in person and online, with or without clinically trained facilitators. [^12]
- **Small trials.** A study of 16 couples in Iran found improvements in marital adjustment and intimacy after ten sessions of Gottman couple therapy compared with a control group. [^13]

How does that compare with other approaches? A 2022 review of couples therapy research from 2010 to 2019 classified behavioral, cognitive-behavioral, emotionally focused and integrative behavioral couple therapies as "well-established." The Gottman Method was not among the approaches it named as well-established. [^14] That doesn't mean it doesn't work. It means the controlled-trial evidence is thinner than for some alternatives.

## How to use Gottman ideas at home

You don't need a therapist to start using these ideas. Here's a simple four-week plan:

1. **Week 1: Love maps.** Spend 10 minutes a day asking each other open questions about current worries, hopes and plans.
2. **Week 2: Fondness and admiration.** Each day, tell your partner one specific thing you appreciate about them.
3. **Week 3: Turning toward.** Notice bids. When your partner says "Look at this," look. When they sigh, ask what's up.
4. **Week 4: Managing conflict.** Agree on a pause signal, two repair phrases and a soft-startup formula, then hold a short weekly check-in.

## How do you find a Gottman therapist?

The Gottman Referral Network lists Gottman-trained therapists and is searchable by country, state, city, ZIP code or name. [^15] Training levels vary, so ask how much Gottman training a therapist has completed. Always confirm that they also hold a current state license.

Our article on [how to find a good couples therapist](https://strongercouple.app/blog/how-to-find-a-couples-therapist) covers credentials, questions to ask and cost options.

## When to get professional help

Self-guided exercises help many couples, but they're not a substitute for therapy. This article is for education. Reach out to a licensed couples therapist if contempt or stonewalling has become routine, if there's been an affair, or if either partner is thinking of leaving. Our [getting help guide](https://strongercouple.app/library/guides/getting-help) explains your options.

Couples therapy is not recommended where there is abuse, coercive control or fear. If that's your situation, contact a domestic violence advocate: call the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-7233, text START to 88788, or visit [Help Now](https://strongercouple.app/help-now).

## Questions people ask

### What is the Gottman Method?

The Gottman Method is a structured approach to couples therapy and relationship education created by psychologists John and Julie Gottman. It aims to increase friendship, respect and affection, manage conflict more gently, and build shared meaning, using concepts like the Sound Relationship House, the Four Horsemen and repair attempts.

### Does the Gottman Method work?

The research on couple interaction behind it is substantial, and several outcome studies, including an uncontrolled study of 106 gay and lesbian couples and a 2024 Norwegian program evaluation, report improvements. However, many outcome studies are small or lack randomized controls, and major reviews have classified other approaches such as EFT as better established.

### What are the seven principles of the Gottman Method?

The seven levels of the Sound Relationship House are: build love maps, share fondness and admiration, turn toward instead of away, the positive perspective, manage conflict, make life dreams come true, and create shared meaning. Trust and commitment are the two walls that hold the house up.

### How do I find a Gottman therapist?

The Gottman Referral Network lists Gottman-trained therapists and lets you search by country, state, city or ZIP code. Always confirm a therapist's state license as well as their training.
