# Love maps

> A love map is what you know of your partner's inner world: worries, hopes, history and daily life. Learn where the idea comes from and how to update it.

## Key takeaways

- A love map is the mental picture you hold of your partner's inner world, including their history, worries, hopes and daily life.
- Love maps are the first level of John Gottman's model of a healthy relationship, described in The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work.
- People change, so love maps need regular updating through curious, open-ended questions.
- Knowing each other well gives couples a foundation for handling stress and big life changes.

A love map is the part of your mind where you store what you know about your partner's inner world: their history, daily stresses, friends, fears, hopes and dreams. John Gottman uses the term to describe how well partners really know each other. Detailed, up-to-date love maps help couples feel understood and give them a foundation for handling stress, change and conflict together.

## Where the idea comes from

Gottman and Nan Silver describe enhancing your love maps as the first of seven principles in _The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work_ [^1]. In Gottman's model, knowing each other is the base level on which friendship, trust and conflict skills are built.

Research on couples becoming parents points in the same direction. In a study that followed 130 newlywed couples for six years, mothers whose marital satisfaction stayed stable or rose after the first baby were more likely to have husbands who expressed fondness and who showed high awareness of their wife and the relationship, along with their own awareness of their husband [^2]. That study looked at a specific group of married, heterosexual couples, but "awareness of your partner" is close to what love maps describe.

## What love maps look like

Partners with strong love maps can answer questions like:

- What's your partner most worried about at work right now?
- Who are their closest friends these days?
- What was a turning point in their childhood?
- What would a perfect Saturday look like for them?
- What's one dream they haven't told many people?

Love maps are not trivia. Knowing a favorite color matters less than knowing what your partner is anxious about this month. And maps go stale: the job you remember them hating may have become a job they love.

## What to do about it

The Gottman Institute suggests building love maps through open-ended questions and genuine curiosity [^3]:

- **Ask questions that can't be answered with yes or no.** "What was the best part of your week?" beats "Good week?"
- **Follow up.** "What made that hard?" shows you're listening.
- **Update regularly.** Big changes such as a move, a new baby or a job loss are times to ask again.
- **Make it playful.** Quiz each other, then compare answers with curiosity, not judgment.
- **Share your own map.** Offer details about your inner world, too.

## Questions people ask

### How do you build a love map?

Ask open-ended questions and really listen to the answers. Questions like 'What's stressing you most this week?' or 'What's something you're looking forward to?' build love maps faster than yes-or-no questions.

### Can love maps fade?

Yes. Busy seasons, new jobs or kids can leave couples working from an outdated picture of each other. Regular check-ins and curious questions keep the map current.
