# Repair Conversation Worksheet After an Argument

> This repair conversation worksheet helps you and your partner talk through an argument after you are both calm. Each of you fills in your own copy, covering what happened, what you felt and needed, and your part in it. Then you share in turns and agree on what to try next time.

> **If you feel unsafe.** These ideas assume both partners feel safe. If you are afraid of your partner, or there is abuse, threats or coercive control, couples techniques are not the right tool. Talk to a domestic violence advocate instead. National Domestic Violence Hotline: call 1-800-799-7233, text START to 88788, or chat at thehotline.org. 988 Suicide & Crisis Lifeline: call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org. ## How to use this worksheet

Time needed: about 40 minutes. Print one copy for each partner.

1. **Wait until you are both calm.** After a heated argument, take at least 20 minutes apart. Start only when neither of you feels flooded or still wants to win.
2. **Fill in your own copy.** Write alone for about 10 minutes. Describe your side without blaming. Use "I" statements.
3. **Share in turns.** One person reads their answers while the other only listens. Then swap. No rebuttals yet.
4. **Say what you understand.** Each of you states what you understand about the other side, even if you see it differently. Ask, "Did I get that right?"
5. **Agree on a next step.** Pick one small thing to try next time and tick the repair agreement. Stop if either of you feels flooded and come back later.

### Repair agreement

- [ ] We both waited until we were calm

- [ ] Each of us said what we understood about the other
- [ ] We agreed on one thing to try next time
- [ ] We ended with a small act of care, like a hug or a cup of tea

## Tips

- Do not start if either of you is still angry or shaky. A [20-minute break](https://strongercouple.app/library/glossary/emotional-flooding) is the minimum, and longer is fine.
- Aim to understand, not to win. You do not need to agree on every detail of what happened.
- A real [apology](https://strongercouple.app/blog/how-to-apologize-to-your-partner) names what you did and does not add "but".
- If emotions rise during the talk, pause and use the [conflict pause timer](https://strongercouple.app/tools/conflict-pause-timer).

## Questions

### When is the right time to do a repair conversation?

When you are both calm, which usually means at least 20 minutes after the argument ended, sometimes much longer. Heart rate and thoughts need time to settle after [emotional flooding](https://strongercouple.app/blog/emotional-flooding). If either of you still feels angry, hurt or shut down, wait. Later the same day or the next day is fine.

### What if my partner will not take part?

Do not force it. You can fill in your own copy to clear your head, then offer a short, kind invitation later, such as, "Whenever you are ready, I would like to talk about last night." You can only change your own part, and one person repairing often invites the other to follow.

### What counts as taking responsibility?

Naming one specific thing you did, like raising your voice, interrupting or going silent, without explaining it away. It is not agreeing that the whole argument was your fault. Small, honest ownership usually lowers defensiveness and makes your partner more likely to share their own part.

### Should we use this if one of us is afraid?

No. This worksheet assumes both partners feel safe. If you are afraid of your partner, or you feel controlled, threatened or hurt, do not use a mutual exercise like this. Contact the resources in the safety box on this page, or read [healthy, unhealthy or abusive](https://strongercouple.app/blog/healthy-unhealthy-abusive).
